Restaurants often ask whether Google Ads or Facebook and Instagram advertising is better. The more useful answer is that they can reach customers at different moments.

Google can capture existing intent

Someone searching for a cuisine, private dining or a restaurant in a particular location is already expressing a need. Search advertising can put a relevant venue in front of that demand, subject to the auction and campaign setup.

Meta can create discovery

Instagram and Facebook advertising can introduce a venue to people who were not actively searching at that moment. Strong creative and a clear reason to visit therefore matter.

The landing destination matters

Google traffic searching for private dining should land somewhere that explains private dining. A Meta campaign promoting an event should lead to current information and a working booking path.

Location targeting needs judgement

A suburban café, CBD lunch venue and destination restaurant should not automatically use the same radius. Treat targeting as something to test against actual customer and booking information.

Measure meaningful actions

Depending on the campaign, look at bookings, enquiries, calls, menu views, directions, landing-page engagement and cost per useful action.

Customers move between channels

A diner may see a restaurant on Instagram and search Google days later. One platform does not necessarily deserve all the credit.

Avoid fixed internet benchmarks

Advertising costs and results vary by market, competition, creative, offer, season and conversion experience.

The right channel depends on whether the immediate job is to capture demand, create demand, or do both.
