Summer Holiday Packages for Queensland Hotels: How to Plan and Price Them Before December

For Queensland hotels and holiday stays: plan summer holiday packages around the 2026-27 school holidays, price them legally and launch before families book.

Queensland hotels and holiday stays should have their summer holiday packages priced and on sale by early November. State school holidays run from Saturday 12 December 2026 to Tuesday 26 January 2027, according to the Queensland Department of Education, and the families you want are planning those weeks while the kids are still at school.

This is for owners, general managers and marketing managers of hotels, boutique stays, serviced apartments and coastal or regional accommodation in Queensland. In the next few weeks you need to decide which packages are worth building, and how to price them so the advertised figure holds up under Australian Consumer Law.

Map the summer by who is on holiday, and when

Summer is several short seasons stacked together. Queensland state school students finish Term 4 on Friday 11 December, and the holidays start on Saturday 12 December. Interstate families arrive later. In New South Wales, students finish Term 4 on Thursday 17 December and the NSW Department of Education lists the summer holidays from Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027 (eastern division). In Victoria, Term 4 ends on Friday 18 December and the Victorian Government's school term dates page lists the school holidays from Monday 21 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027. If your guests drive up from northern New South Wales or fly in from Melbourne, your peak starts six to nine days after the local one.

Public holidays then shape staffing and pricing. The Fair Work Ombudsman's 2026 public holidays and 2027 public holidays pages list these for Queensland across the summer:

  • Thursday 24 December: Christmas Eve, from 6pm to midnight
  • Friday 25 December: Christmas Day
  • Saturday 26 December: Boxing Day
  • Monday 28 December: additional public holiday for Boxing Day
  • Friday 1 January 2027: New Year's Day
  • Tuesday 26 January 2027: Australia Day

Australia Day is also the last day of the Queensland school holidays. Put all of it on one page next to last summer's occupancy by night. The gaps show up quickly, and that page becomes the brief for everything that follows.

Build summer holiday packages around a reason to travel

A package earns its place when it solves a problem the guest already has. A room with 10% off solves nothing in particular. Families care about sleeping arrangements, breakfast and what to do on a wet afternoon. Couples may want the pre-Christmas window before school holidays fill the pool. Brisbane locals who stay home for Christmas might like two nights away between Boxing Day and New Year.

Some illustrative examples to adapt to your own property:

  • A family package with a connecting room or two-bedroom apartment, kids' breakfast included and a late checkout on Saturday changeover days
  • A midweek couples' package for late November and early December, with dinner in the hotel restaurant and parking included
  • A "between the holidays" local stay from 27 to 31 December, built around a partner experience nearby

The partner piece matters more than it looks. A tour operator, day spa, attraction or nearby restaurant gives media and creators something to write about, and gives the guest a reason to pick you over a similar room down the road. Agree in writing who takes bookings for the partner component and what happens if it sells out or is cancelled.

Advertise the total price, including every fee you know about

This is where summer packages get accommodation businesses into trouble. The ACCC's component pricing guidance says that if you promote part of a price, you must also show the total price as a single figure, at least as prominently. That single price must include any tax, fee, levy or other additional charge, plus optional extras you have pre-selected for the guest unless they deselect them.

In practice, a mandatory cleaning fee, resort fee or compulsory parking charge belongs in the headline number. "From $289 per night" only works if a guest can actually book a night for $289 without something unavoidable being added later. Check every place the package appears: your booking engine, social posts, paid ads, email, and anything you hand a partner to promote. Prices drift between channels when packages are loaded in a hurry, and guests do notice.

Fix your booking flow now, because drip pricing rules tighten in 2027

Parliament has passed the Competition and Consumer Amendment (Unfair Trading Practices) Act 2026, which includes new drip pricing provisions for the Australian Consumer Law. A Hall & Wilcox summary explains that the changes take effect from 1 July 2027 and will require businesses that display a price to clearly disclose mandatory transaction-based charges at the same time.

That start date falls after this summer, and you should get legal advice on exactly how the new rules apply to your booking path. Still, you are rebuilding rate plans and booking pages for summer anyway. Cleaning up fee disclosure now, while the packages are fresh, costs less than reopening every page next June. Put public holiday surcharges where guests see them before they book

Plenty of hotels run a restaurant or bar, and summer is full of public holidays. The ACCC's price displays guidance allows restaurants and cafes to leave a weekend or public holiday surcharge out of their menu prices, provided the menu states "A surcharge of [percentage] applies on [day or days]."

That exemption is written for restaurants and cafes, so don't assume it carries over to room rates or packages. If Christmas Day lunch is included in a package, show the price the guest will actually pay. If the restaurant adds a public holiday surcharge for other diners, put the wording on the menu, the online booking page and the Christmas lunch post as well as at the register.

Pitch media and creators a specific trip

Travel editors and lifestyle creators see plenty of summer discounts. What gets their attention is a specific trip, for example a wet-weather day for young families, planned around a nearby partner attraction. Lead with the itinerary and the practical details a reader needs, then mention the package.

Hosted creator stays work best when the brief covers the whole stay, gives the creator a reason to show the surrounding area and spells out the deliverables. Our guide to hotel creator stays goes through how to set one up. Anything hosted or paid should be clearly disclosed as advertising and never presented as a guest review; influencer disclosure in Australia covers the detail. Also make sure no creator posts a package price that differs from your booking page.

Fill the soft nights instead of discounting the peak

Christmas and New Year nights often fill with little help. Your planning page will show where the real work sits, perhaps in the weeks before Queensland schools finish, or on Sunday nights through January.

Point your packages and paid budget at those nights. A midweek package with a genuine inclusion protects your rate better than a blanket sale, and it gives you something fresh to talk about in January once the Christmas content has gone quiet. The thinking mirrors how we approach seasonal restaurant campaigns: plan before customers start searching, and decide what each offer is meant to achieve.

Set up tracking before the first post goes out

Views and media mentions show interest. Bookings show results, and you can only connect the two if tracking is in place before launch:

  • Give each package its own rate code in the booking engine
  • Build one landing page per package with the total price, inclusions and valid dates
  • Add UTM tags to every link in social, email, partner and creator posts
  • Agree on a weekly check of package bookings, nights sold, average rate and cancellations

By mid-November you will know which package is moving and can shift effort before the holidays begin, rather than finding out in February.

With the dates mapped and every package showing its real price on every channel, you go into December knowing what is selling and where to push.
